Since its inception the district 20-R2 Rapid Response Disaster Committee has helped hundreds of families and individuals who lost loved ones and who were left unemployed due to the September 11th, 2001 World Trade Center Disaster. Through the efforts of District Governor Mike Santos, it was possible to apply for Lions Clubs International Foundation 9/11 Major Projects Grants totaling $542,000.00 for (8) eight New York City based not for profit organizations. These organizations were providing and continue to provide such services as bereavement counseling, monitoring programs for children who lost parents and for spouses who lost their significant other. Job training for mothers who had to go back to work to replace the income lost and when the primary provider for the family perished on 9/11 and cross the training of individuals who lost their jobs and businesses and needed to find employment in other fields. One such organization is Henry Street Settlement, located in the in borough of Manhattan just a few city blocks away from where the disaster borough of monitoring programs for blocks away from children who lost parents and for spouses who lost their significant other. Job providing training for mothers who had to go back to work to replace the income lost and when the primary provider for the family programs. perished on 9/11 and cross training of Ingrid individuals who lost their jobs and United businesses and needed to find employment in other fields. One such organization is Henry Street Settlement, located in the good borough of Manhattan just a few city blocks away from where the disaster occurred, the organization had been providing many of the services mentioned Projects Grants. herein and was in need of additional capital to maintain and expand existing programs. Through the efforts of Lion. Ingrid Leacock Charter President of the United Nations Lions Club an individual who for many years has been active in community affairs and an Ambassador of good will representing Lions Clubs International in her own special way, was instrumental in the Henry Street Settlement receiving a $100,000.00, 9/11 Major Projects Grants.
The committee is currently working to partnership with as many volunteer organizations that specialize in disaster relief efforts. It has developed a “Disaster Preparedness Training Program” which the committee feels is an excellent vehicle to enable Lions Clubs volunteers to become “Certified Emergency Response Team Members” in all five boroughs. At present we are building our database of Lions Clubs who may want to participate in the disaster preparedness-training program, as we believe this is something the Lions Clubs District 20-R2 can embrace and perhaps become the first “CERT” trained teams and ambassadors to other communities. For additional information on how to become a “CERT” member please call (718) 379-2858
I extend my congratulations to the officers and Directors of the Henry Street Settlement for their participation and excellent work with the community.
Sincerely Mike
