DOMESTIC VIOLENCE - ARE YOU LISTENING?
By: Arnet Crespo
What is Domestic Violence/Abuse?   The use of
abusive and violent behavior among married couples,
intimate partners, children and elders living together.
It is not limited to any ethnic, cultural or income
level.  This behavior is criminal and can lead to
serious harm or death.  This behavior is not confined
to the home.  It often reaches out to the victim's place
of employment or social gatherings.

Is there someone you know that is or may be a
victim?  Are you a victim?

If your answer is, "No", that is very fortunate.
However, let me share with you with that this year
as of  September 16, 2003 there were *42 family
related homicides in New York City five boroughs.
The Police Department responds to over *600
domestic violence incidents per day on average,*
96,325 calls were answered this year as of August 31,
2003.

If your answer was "Yes", unfortunately, you or this
person is amongst the thousands of victims that live
their lives daily in anguish and hurt.  They may be a
victim of rape, physical and mental abuse even
unlawful imprisonment.

How can you help?   The first and most effective
means is intervention.  You do not have to be a
trained professional to lend a listening ear, or give
vital information.  There is hope, there is help.

For victim services Call NYC's 24 hour Domestic
Violent Hotline at 1-800-621 HOPE (4673)  For the
hearing impaired TTY:  1-800-810-7444 or 3-1-1 for
general services information.

Throughout the City of New York the month of
October has been dedicated to Domestic Violence
Awareness.   There are events and seminars you can
attend that will provide information and services.  To
get information on the Mayor's Office to Combat
Domestic Violence Calendar of Events call (212)
788-3156.  To volunteer your services call (212)
331-4538.

*The above statistics were retrieved from the Mayor's
Office to Combat Domestic Violence, Domestic
Violence Fact Sheet, September, 2003.  You may
access more statistics and facts by visiting their
website.

I will have brochures and handouts for your
information at the next United Nations Lion's Club
meeting on  October 16, 2003.
  .

Let's continue to be vigilante in our quest for peace at
home and abroad.

Respectfully yours,

Arnet Crespo
